The First Tee of Suffolk County

About Us

Since 2005, The First Tee of Suffolk County has offered golf programming to approximately 450 juniors in Suffolk County.  Prior to securing a location in Central Islip at Gull Haven Golf Club, The First Tee of Suffolk County worked with school districts to offer golf programming from their ball fields and open areas, during physical education classes and after-school programs.  Unlike most in-school programs, golf curriculum instruction was also provided to physical education teachers, enabling them to assist in program instruction.  This successful model enabled in-school programs to continue as part of their existing physical education curriculum.

Thanks to the Town of Islip and the Long Island Foundation for Education and Sports, The First Tee of Suffolk County has secured an official location to call home.  In 2009, Suffolk County The First Tee operated from Gull Haven Golf Club.  Over 200 participants enrolled in the Target and Par level programs this past summer, and this number is still growing.  Gull Haven is an ideal location, centrally located on Long Island and easily accessible for parents.

Program Description
The First Tee Summer Programming is a youth development program offering education, fitness, wellness and life skills to children using golf and its inherent values as context.  Employing activity based programming, students begin to acquire life tools and skills to reinforce lessons they learn at home and in school.

These lessons for life are taught through a variety of golf-related exercises designed with the primary goal of having fun.  Participants learn about themselves and others through a range of experiences that enhance their golf fundamentals as well as their fundamental values for life.  As their opportunities on the golf course expand, so do the opportunities for their futures.

All participants receive The First Tee Card so their progress can be monitored as they advance through The First Tee certification levels of Par, Birdie, Eagle, and Ace. Each stage introduces young people to different aspects of golf and life skills.

Advancing from one level to the next is accomplished by demonstrating acquired life skills, learning the rules of golf, posting a required number of rounds on the golf course and having the recommendation of The First Tee Coach.

The lessons learned through the Life Skills Experience are lessons which will remain with young people well into their future.  Program objectives include, improving the game’s accessibility, making golf more available to people of all social strata, particularly children.
